Upcoming Exhibition Deadlines - March 11th, 2012-- March 17th, 2012

Open Calls:

Seeking Performance Writing.

Call Type: Writing
Deadline Type: fixed
Deadline: 3/12/2012
Eligibility: National
In August of 2010 performance theorist Amelia Jones sent the following letter to a group of well-known performers.

Dear XX,

I am writing to you with an invitation to participate in what I hope will be a groundbreaking dialogue on the very current phenomenon of documenting, reenacting and/or exhibiting traces of past performances in art institutions such as galleries, museums, and mainstream art magazines. You have been central in developing a critical relationship to these practices and we hope very much you will be willing to participate in a brief e-mail dialogue on the topic....

The key question in this dialogue will be: What are the costs and benefits of the current move to institutionalize performance art by documenting it (often on websites or in archives), reenacting performances, and/or exhibiting performance art histories in galleries and art museums?

...

Best,

We are looking for writing from performers, administrators, artists, and the like who are interested in responding to these ideas. There are no restrictions in terms of length or style. Once collected these writings will be published as an editioned Newspaper.

Apply for a Session
Recess
(New York NY)
Recess is now accepting applications for Session, our signature program.

Applications are due March 15, 2011. Please Read All Application Guidelines Before Submitting Any Materials For Consideration. Applications will be used to fill residencies beginning September 2012 for SoHo, Manhattan and summer 2012 (exact time TBD) for Red Hook, Brooklyn.

Recess facilitates every-day interactions between artists and audiences in order to promote the productive space of the working artist as a site of valuable visual and intellectual interactions. Our endeavors promote critical exposure for the artists we support while fostering an inclusive environment in which artists and the public can engage in a meaningful exchange of art and ideas.

Recess is free and open to the public, and we encourage artists to engage with their audience in a manner specific to their creative goals, using Recess as a studio, exhibition space, stage, and/or experimental platform. Session artists have access to their space for the full duration of their residency (typically 2-3 months) and are expected to work on a daily basis or the equivalent of at least twenty hours per week. Session artists receive a small honorarium and a stipend based on the material needs of the residency. In conversation with Recess staff, artists designate their own work hours and the degree to which they coincide with public hours.

Recess is currently operating out of two spaces: one in SoHo, Manhattan and the other in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Applicants can indicate if they have a preference between the spaces.

Recess residents will be selected based on the conceptual rigor and artistic quality of their proposal and their ability to work productively within the program. Successful applicants will articulate a particular need to work in a manner that expands beyond traditional studio method and gallery exhibition.

In an effort to decentralize visual authority while maintaining a level of critical cogency a panel consisting of former Recess artists in residence, leaders from the contemporary arts community, and arts practitioners with programming experience will review Recess’s applications.

Artists must submit an application form (available to download on our website), CV, artists statement, project proposal, proposed budget, work samples, and a work description list.

Complete guidelines can be found on our website.

3. Judging: The judging for the competition is blind. This means an applicant’s name, school, gender, and age are not presented during judging; applicant portfolios are assigned a random number. A small portion of the applicants will be selected and invited to participate in the second step of the judging, which includes an evening exhibition. Finalists will receive notification and instructions for this second step in the judging process approximately one month prior to the exhibition.

This means that all works must have appropriate hanging hardware (i.e. d-rings and/or wire) installed prior to delivery at the Club. Due to the nature of the gallery walls, work cannot be hung using L-hooks, cleats, bolts, or saw tooth hangers. Please allow for advance time and alert us if work has special display issues.

· For the Moving Image Category, finalists will be asked to submit an extended version of their submission that is no longer than 3 minutes and will be contacted to make arrangements to display their submission at the exhibit on May 31st. We are seeking visual understandings of reality in its purest sense. We have been extremely fortunate to be creating an exciting, diverse, and active meeting place for artists. These days the printed books that were previously published by publishers now can be read on line as ebooks. What is the future? Instead of having to interact with computers through not-so-intuitive and sometimes even counter-intuitive devices like a computer mouse or trackpad, soon users will be able to control their computers doing natural human movements such as gestures, whole-body movement, eye movement, and perhaps even such things as facial expressions. Catagenesis: Site Specific Installations at Globe Dye Works
Philadelphia Sculptors
(Philadelphia PA)
Philadelphia Sculptors is offering a great opportunity for artists interested in pushing their own personal boundaries and creating innovative site specific works in an unusual setting. We are sponsoring “Catagenesis,” a major exhibition of installations and multi-media works at Globe Dye Works, a former manufacturing facility in Philadelphia that bleached and dyed textiles from 1865 - 2005. Scheduled for September 9 – October 21, 2012, “Catagenesis” refers to the concept that breakdown, instead of being an end, becomes a beginning as it progresses to reorganization, and then ideally, renewal. Artists become the catalysts for repurposing, and ultimately transforming, a former industrial structure into a place of growth and creativity. We are seeking submissions from artists that respond to the historic context of the site or to its physical condition. Proposals may acknowledge some aspect of the history of the building such as the role of manufacturing in Philadelphia; the different products created there; the importance of water and its relationship to the city’s economy; the impact of the factory on the community; the lives of the workers; or other related themes. Interactive, multi-media, and installation works are encouraged. The postmark submission deadline is March 15, 2012. Selected artists will receive an honorarium of $750. The jurors are Independent Curator Cheryl Harper, Public Artist Donald Lipski, and Tom Moran, Chief Curator and Director of Artistic Development at Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ. The entry fee is $15 for Philadelphia Sculptors members and $25 for non-members (or discounted membership and entry fee of $45 for new members.) All work must be submitted in digital format. For prospectus and more information, go to www.philasculptors.org/catagenesis or contact Leslie Kaufman at 215-413-9126, lesliekaufman@verizon.net.

Artist Residencies in Southwest Ireland
Cill Rialaig Artists Retreat
(Ballinskelligs, County Kerry Other)
The Cill Rialaig Project in southwest Kerry invites applications for residencies for September 2012 to December 2013. Built out of the ruins of a 1790s pre-famine village atop a cliff face overlooking the Atlantic, Cill Rialaig offers professional artists, writers and other creative professionals an opportunity to get away from everyday career pressures and the demands of 21st century life in order to focus entirely on their artistic practice. While residents are primarily visual artists, they also include photographers, writers, poets, screenwriters, applied artists, musicians and composers, architects, and their peers, from Ireland and abroad.

Cill Rialaig is located in a remote Gaeltacht, or Irish-speaking area. Its cottages are living-work spaces that provide for residents’ essential work and living needs. They are very simple without modern accoutrements of television, telephones or internet. The remote location means that there are very few distractions other than the landscape; it is a true retreat.

Residencies are offered free of charge, although there is a small service fee for utilities. Residents provide their own transportation, food and supplies. The selection committee meets twice a year, and the next deadline for applications is March 15, 2011. The following deadline is September 2012. Please contact Mary O’Connell at cillrialaigarts@gmail.com for information about applying.
